Education Week

Mayor gives green awards at Annandale Public Schoo

Leichhardt Mayor Jamie Parker visited Annandale Public School today to officially launch
NSW Education Week.

This year, Education Week focuses on the theme of Environmental Sustainability. Cr Parker was able to see that theme in action at the school, with children from pre-school to year 6 all actively engaged in a wide range of environmental activities.

These include the Learning Garden, where children grow and eat their own crops of fruit, vegetables and herbs, and the Frog Pond, where biodiversity and life - cycle lessons are brought to life.

During recess and lunchtime, students and teachers recycle their food scraps into compost bins and worm farms. And three new rainwater tanks aim to reduce water consumption in the school by more than two-thirds over the next 12 months.

During his visit, Cr Parker attended a special Environmental Assembly, and presented the school Environmental Awards to those students who have shown an exceptional commitment to the school’s environment programs.

He also enjoyed some of the environmental and science workshops run throughout the day at the school, as part of the Education Week program.

Principal Craig Nielsen said; “As a school community, we know that encouraging changes in our behaviour is just one part of the solution. We are also lucky that, even though we are an inner-city school, we have the space available for such projects."
