In February, following the horrific Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, students, parents and teachers at Annandale Public School  held a community-wide book appeal for the victims of Victoria’s tragic bushfires.

What began as a chat in the playground between school parents Ellie Luff and Rachael Brine, soon escalated into a school community event.

Three primary schools, in Strathewen, Kinglake and Marysville, were completely destroyed in the fires on February 7th and 8th. Annandale Public School hoped the book drive would provide enough books to help them rebuild their libraries and teaching resources. It would also give those children who have lost everything something to read.

Organisers sought good quality new or used children’s books, for children aged 2 to 16. National transport carrier, Border Express, offered to deliver the donations directly to the communities in Victoria, and the Department of Education in Victoria is to co-ordinate distribution on arrival.

10,000 books are on their way to Victoria
Thank You!

The Annandale Public School Book Drive for Bushfire Schools has been an overwhelming success. We received over 10,000 books from local families, from schools all over Sydney, and from people around New South Wales.

Community Spirit

Your help and support made this possible. Local schools and businesses promoted the book drive, local media and radio supported it, and we received incredibly generous donations of quality readers, novels, reference books and picture books for the families and schools affected by the bushfires.
We’d like to especially thank Border Express, who have volunteered to warehouse and transport all these books, and Storage King Camperdown for donating new packing boxes.

Mums and APS seniors helping sort through all the books.

Off they go…
The books have all been sorted by age and teaching categories, loaded onto pallets and are on their way to Melbourne. Some have been targeted for immediate distribution to schools in need, others will be held at the depot, ready for delivery once the affected schools re-open.

We’re sure that the children of Victoria will enjoy these books for many years to come. Thank you again for all your help in making this happen.
