Yr 5 D
Ms. Derwent

5D consists of 25 children, 14 girls and 11 boys. Our teacher is Ms Derwent.

In term 1 our unit has an environmental focus and is called the Living Land. We are investigating water catchments and environmental pollution concerns in preparation for participation in the DET ‘Murder under the Microscope’ Challenge which begins on the 29th April. In this National Student challenge the children are given clues to solve an environmental accident involving the death of a plant or animal species. We then write an environmental management plan for the area. So far we have studied the water cycle and water catchments, visited White’s Creek Wetlands, and participated in a composting workshop. 5D will also be involved in monitoring the schools water usage through the Sydney Water Smart Water Monitoring System.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning we participate in a run, relays and Blue Earth. In computers we are writing personal digital stories. We have 2 Italian lessons a week. In art we used chalk to recreate wilderness landscapes, which were displayed recently at assembly. In assembly we also celebrated Harmony Day and presented a power point on the benefits of composting for our school environment.

In our gallery we have images of our White’s Creek excursion and art work from term 1.
